They say that the only problem with pain is that it hurts. Actually pain is our body's most effective way to get our attention alerting us that something is wrong. Once alerted it is important that we listen and take the appropriate action to resolve the cause. Unfortunately, we have been educated by the slick advertisers that the best way to deal with pain is to take a pain-relieving drug. Imagine this: You go to your doctor because you have pain in your foot. You are visibly distressed and in pain. Out comes the prescription pad and off you go to the pharmacy for pills that will get rid of the pain. And good news, the pills work great! You experience a dry mouth and you're a little groggy but as long as you take a pill every 4 hours you hardly notice your throbbing foot. After a couple weeks however, the pain is as bad or worse than ever when the drugs wear off. Not wanting to go back for stronger drugs, you complain to a friend who offers to take a look at your foot. She discovers a small shard of glass and reminds you of your barefoot walk on the beach three weeks ago. With the help of well-guided tweezers the glass is removed and the foot heals.

Now this may seem like a ridiculous example, but the point is that too often the treatment of our concerns is directed at covering up the symptoms rather than removing the cause of the problem. Too often the approach is akin to taking the batteries out of the blaring smoke alarm and going back to bed when something is smoldering in the walls.

Arthritis and Lower Back Pain are conditions that we are all familiar with, either personally or with someone we love. There are two main types of arthritis: Degenerative or Osteoarthritis and Inflammatory or Rheumatoid Arthritis. We will discuss each of these and then back pain. We hope that the overview of these condition will not only help you understand them better but give you tools and knowledge that will help you treat the underlying cause of the problem rather than covering up the symptoms.

While no one treatment will be entirely effective for everyone, I have found that the more approaches you employ for your recovery, the greater your chances of success. Our focus in dealing with arthritis and pain is two-fold. First to help relieve the acute pain and then secondly and most importantly, rebuild the body so that the tissues truly heal and the underlying cause is corrected.
